Can I enroll in COBRA after I already signed up for another health plan?

You can enroll in COBRA even if you have signed up for another plan, but your new coverage may affect whether you want to keep COBRA. You should compare cost and benefits before deciding.

You should receive your COBRA election notice within 44 days after the date your health coverage ends or the date you are notified of your rights, whichever is later.

If you do not elect COBRA within the allowed election period, you lose the option to continue your health coverage and your group plan ends permanently.

You are responsible for all monthly premiums plus any administrative fee allowed by law. Your former employer no longer contributes to the cost.

COBRA can end early if you stop paying premiums, if the employer stops offering any group health plan, or if you become eligible for another group health plan.

COBRA coverage typically lasts up to 18 months after employment ends. Certain qualifying events, such as disability or a second qualifying event, can extend coverage up to 36 months.
